President’s Report

As we approach the end of term 4 and the Christmas break, we know that it is often referred to as the ‘season for giving’. Generosity of spirit is often a trait described in educators and school leaders, which is unsurprising given the commitment to education, a strong moral purpose and the responsibilities that ‘serving your community’ brings. Did you know that three Australian blood donations are needed every minute? This season you may like to consider giving something different.

Redcross Lifeblood has donor centres in Burnie, Devonport, Hobart and Launceston. Whilst you can often drop in, the staff prefer a booking which is really simple for you to organise and add your appointment to your calendar. You can even make a social event of donating and make a group booking! Lifeblood have a great follow up system that provides you with information about your blood type and text updates on the journey that your donation takes around the country.

Our North West president Georgia Perry and myself had the pleasure of visiting our colleagues in the far North West. It was a brilliant opportunity to hear about the tremendous work and vision that they have in each of their unique school contexts. If you have never taken a trip to Circular Head and the surrounding communities, we encourage you to do so over the summer break. Some stunning countryside and great hospitality.

Across the past two weeks since our last newsletter, TPA Executive have worked with the following groups and individuals on your behalf

  • BeYou/headpace Victoria/Tas program co-ordinators
  • Executive members Ted Barrance, Maree Pinnington & Mat Grining met with Minister Jaensch’s education advisors to discuss the National School Reform Agreement
  • State Executive met with Michael Anderson (Uni Sydney) and Maryann Hunter (UTAS) to hear about a peer professional supervision pilot
  • Met via Teams with ASPA (secondary education associations from state/territories) to further the national agenda and planning for 2024
  • Represented TPA at the Education Workforce Roundtable to discuss tangible strategies to improve teacher supply and retention in Tasmania
  • Inclusion Advisory Panel with other education stakeholders to discuss disability reforms including, Disability Royal Commission, Educational Adjustments Funding Model Review, NDIS and the Inclusion Disability and Safeguarding Act.
  • Interagency group with government and non-gov stakeholders established by headspace to understand and advocate for postvention support
  • Meeting with the DECYP Deputy Secretaries to discuss updates to the Association’s vision and mission
  • ABC Interview in relation to recent media articles about enrolment trends and school closures
